Migliarina History

THEN
Migliarina Wines was founded by Carsten Migliarina in 2002 when he produced his first wine under his own label. Starting very small, the first production consisted of a Sauvignon Blanc and a Shiraz, both from Franschhoek. The Shiraz was matured in a friends garage.

“Often at tastings I am asked “where are you” in the context of where my estate is, my reply “right in front of you”. I do not own a wine farm, I am not unhappy about this as it allows me the freedom to source the best grapes from the best vineyards I can find.”

NOW
The Migliarina Wines range has expanded considerably since the first production in 2002. Currently cultivars include Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Grenache, Riesling and Shiraz. Grapes are sourced from around the Western Cape and wine is produced in rented cellar space in two different boutique cellars.

Wines are exported to Namibia, Reunion, Europe, Australia, the USA and China and are sold locally in top restaurants and specialised wine shops.

WINEMAKING
Elegant clean wines are the hallmark of the Migliarina brand. All wines are individually hand crafted from some of the best vineyards in the Cape region with exceptional care being taken in preserving varietal and fruit character. Keeping it simple in the cellar with minimum intervention is the basis for ensuring that the wines are fruit driven and elegant.

“Winemaking is a creative process and having an established range of wines limits you in some aspects. I therefore try to make one new wine from a different varietal each year, allowing me the freedom to express my creativity.”

ABOUT CARSTEN
Born in Namibia and raised in South-Africa, Carsten’s interest in all things wine started at the tender age of 14 when he attempted to ferment table grapes. Pursuing his passion for wine, he spent 10 years in the catering industry as sommelier, including Le Pont de la Tour in London and the Grande Roche in Paarl and then earned his winemaking stripes as contract winemaker in South-Africa, Germany and Romania and of course making his own wine. His most recent winemaking adventure took him to China, where he participated in the Ningxia Wine Challenge.

“I did not study winemaking, I have been very fortunate to meet fantastic winemakers willing to share their knowledge and I have been thrown in the deep end quite a few times. If you are passionate about what you do and if you are willing to work hard, you can succeed in this industry.”

Meet Carsten Migliarina - Published on the New World Wine Maker Blog by Dave Huges 30th March 2017.

Migliarina Wines; ‘right in front of you’ - Published on wine.co.za by Dave March 25 April 2017.

"He is, though, rather too large to still be called a ‘garagiste’, making some 40,000 bottles in a good year. Carsten prefers the term ‘boutique winery’ for himself, and says that individual garagistes have got it tough in our market, though there is a necessary place for them alongside the multi-nationals.

Carsten may be low profile, but his CV is anything but. His first ‘vintage’ was at age 14, fermenting table grapes in plastic bottles, which ended up being “uninspiring stuff”. After training three years in hotel management he spent seven years as a Sommelier at some very special establishments, such as Le Pont de la Tour in London and the Grand Roche in Paarl. During that time Carsten travelled to many wine regions, drank some of the world’s greatest wines and was fortunate to meet people like Aubert de Villaine of DRC, Miguel Torres and Paul Draper. Carsten grew more involved in winemaking and spent his first vintage in the South of France in 1997. Many more vintages followed in Germany, South Africa, Romania and China. Carsten loves Riesling, “the king of grapes”, he says, and this is borne out by his nine harvests in Germany including a practical at Schloss Johannisberg in the Rheingau. Vintages in South Africa included Mulderbosch, Ernie Els and for Distell. Carsten has particular affection and respect for Mike Dobrovic who was central to Mulderbosch for two decades; he feels Mike is a truly special and talented winemaker..."

Another Exciting Experimental Elgin Release from Carsten Migliarina published by Greg Sherwood 7 May 2017.

"There are a lot of great cool climate wines being produced in the Cape, many of them originating in Elgin. But unusually, this new release is not a Chardonnay, Semillon or a Sauvignon Blanc, but a superb cool, crunchy, mineral Riesling.

Seitensprung means an “affair” or “side step” and Carsten’s idea is to make one experimental wine from a different grape variety every year. This would allow Carsten full artistic experimental freedom and no accumulative pressure or expectations, with the wines only being bottled if quality meets his high standards.

This is a one-off Riesling, itself unusual in South Africa and lovers of the variety will hopefully see some of Carsten’s German heritage in this exciting new wine.

Migliarina Wines Riesling Seitensprung 2016, W.O. Elgin, 12 Abv.

Like all Carsten’s wines, this is another serious effort. So grown up and old worldly in style. Not sure how he pulls it off time and time again, but this is so taught and mineral-laden with gravel, wet river pebbles, wet chalk, dried herbs and dry summer stable straw. The palate is a mirror image of the nose, seamlessly balanced and vibrantly fresh showing crunchy green apple, dried straw spice, pithy green pear, and incredibly rasping dry lemon complemented by crystalline purity and framed by profound liquid minerality. This is a very classy Riesling unlike anything I’ve tasted recently in South Africa, built more in a structured German Nahe or Rhinegau Trocken style. Superb wine. Glückwunsch Carsten!

(Wine Safari Score: 92+/100 Greg Sherwood MW) "

The Stephen Tanzer/Vinous Chenin Blanc 2015 91 points

"(from old bush vines in Stellenbosch and Swartland; proprietor/winemaker Carsten Migliarina was previously a sommelier): Bright medium yellow. Sexy wildness to the aromas of ripe peach, spices and botanical herbs. At once rich and energetic, offering a sophisticated combination of stone fruits, firm acidity and dusty tactility; still some CO2 to be absorbed. A very fresh, youthful but substantial Chenin Blanc for the dinner table. Finishes clean, firm and long, with subtle spicy oak providing grip. I suspect another year or two in bottle will bring more complexity without loss of energy."

Tasting the Maiden Release of Carsten Migliarina’s 2015 Single Vineyard Elgin Chardonnay… published by Greg Sherwood 20 May 2017.

"South Africa’s Carsten Migliarina has made some superb Chardonnays in the past, so it was with great excitement that I tasted his new single vineyard expression from Elgin. His wine making reputation is growing by the day and so are his awards. He also works masterfully with cool climate terroirs as evidenced in the precision of his Elgin Chenin Blancs, Riesling and of course Chardonnay.

At 14 Abv, you’d expect this wine to show some depth and power… and of course it does. The nose is beautifully complex with green apple skins, tart crunchy green pears and dusty minerality. But the oaking is also perfectly judged for the weight of the fruit concentration. On the nose it’s very subtle with bruleed creme caramel hints and lemon pie brightness. The oaking on the palate, at this stage, is a little more obvious, but definitely very high quality. Even with the multiple layers of pithy lemon confit, honeydew melon and caramelised fig notes, Carsten’s signature minerality prevails, dominating the finish with a real classical restraint and dusty, gravelly, Schweppes bitter lemon intensity. A fantastic expression with all the old world minerality of a top Umbrian or Friuli cool climate Chardonnay. Drink from 2018 to 2025."
